Out of State Drivers License Reinstatement Process

Over the past 20 years our firm has handled more and more people who live out of the State of Illinois. These people have not been able to renew their current State’s Drivers License or obtain a new Drivers License in their current State because of a "hold" in Illinois. The reason for this is that a national database has been created that most states check after a request to renew a Driver's License or an application for a new Driver's License has been received.

Up until the last few years this database has not been available. If the person is revoked or suspended in Illinois the national database will indicate this. That person’s renewal of their Drivers License or issuance of a new Drivers License will then be denied by their current State. The person then must contact Illinois and start the process of clearing the "hold" in Illinois. Until this Illinois Hold is cleared that person will be unable to renew or obtain a Drivers License in their current State.

The clearing of an Illinois Hold can be a very frustrating process. It is very hard to reach the right people at the Secretary of State’s office and the process to clear the Illinois Hold can be very confusing. Our office has helped hundreds of people from all around the country clear up their Illinois Hold.
